Students meeting the following federal TRIO-eligible criteria may be considered for selection as Upward Bound (UB) participants:

  • High school students demonstrating an interest in attending college
  • Students who attend Park Center, Brooklyn Center, and Robbinsdale Cooper High Schools (total 50) 
  • Academic need (low grades, low test scores, and/or have not completed pre-algebra, algebra 1 and geometry math courses)
  • Low income (eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch), potential first generation college student (neither parent has a 4-year degree), or at-risk academically (did not pass MCA reading or math tests) 
  • Commitment to remain active in UB throughout high school graduation

The Upward Bound Program can provide: 

Academic preparation for college

  • College preparatory courses
  • After school tutorials & Saturday test preparation seminars (ACT and SAT)
  • Six-week summer session on the NHCC campus

Educational and career planning

  • Academic advising
  • College and career exploration
  • College and career field trips

College admissions and financial aid information

  • PLAN and SAT/ACT information, registration materials, and fee waivers
  • Individual assistance with college admissions applications
  • Individual assistance with scholarship and financial aid applications

Students can also earn up to $40 per month by attending and participating in program activities and cultural events such as visits to museums, plays, and a variety of other events!

UB staff will review all submitted application packets and contact eligible students and their parents to participate in a Student and Parent Interview. Please contact the UB Office for more information and/or to refer a student to receive an application packet.
